Orchestre Maquis Original du Zaire Biography
Orchestre Maquis started out in 1966 as Orchestre Super Gabby, a group formed by some young Zairean musicians. In 1972, the band changed its name to Orchestre Maquis du Zaire and moved to Tanzania, where they became quite popular and so decided to stay.
Today, with a membership of over 40 musicians, they are still one of the most popular bands in Tanzania. Founding member and bandleader Chinyama Chianza died in 1985, with guitarist Nguza Mbangu (aka Viking) taking over the band. He went solo in 1987, with guitarist Dekula Kahanga (aka Vumbi) taking his place and revitalizing the band with his sharp-edged sound. ~ Steve Huey
