Danny Engobo
By L. J. Zikimoto
Danny Engobo's music career began long before he was even 10 years old! At eight years old in Owanda, a small town near the Congo basin this future star's sweet voice was waking up the birds. Danny was part of a vocal group called Les jeunes Cousins (Young Cousins).
After a local competition the young cousins were chosen to represent the entire region at a cultural week in Brazzaville. Les jeunes Cousins took third place, behind the two prestigious groups in Congo at the time; Les Cols Bleus(The Blue Collar) and Les Anges(Angels).
The third place finish did not deter nor dampen the young mans dreams. Rather it shone a light on what could be. It is not surprising then that in 1973 that young man from Owando called on Tout choc Zimbabwe(Any shock Zimbabwe) a group founded by Petrous.
Danny Engobo created his first Band in 1974. He named it "Lolango" (Love). Shortly after the creation of the Band he moved to Poto Poto where Lolango was the talk of the town. The young man had talent! At this point he knew he could count on his voice to get him places.
His first big break was in 1976 when he was invited to work on a record by L’orchestre Fuka-Feza. He wrote his first hit Turkison. In the same year just like most Congo(Zaire) Musicians at the time, Engobo decided to cross the big pond in search of greener pastures. He landed in Paris France
In 1983 Danny and his old buddy from Congo Marcellin Megot decided to revive their collaboration this time in the Parisienne limelight. They formed the famous LES COEURS BRISES (The Broken Hearts) Together Danny and Marcellin put together several Soukous and Zouk hits.
Why did they name a Soukous band "Broken Hearts?" See an explanation under our Band Listing LES COEURS BRISES
In 1991, for professional reasons, Marcellin Megot (Megot Selija)returned to his native Congo. This was a big blow to Danny but just like the early days Engobo would pick himself up again and flourish. He assembled a new group of Musicians a nice group of Talented and Gorgeous dancers and the famous new face of LES COEURS BRISES was born.
To this day, Engobo's Tapes, CD's, Videos, DVD's and Bluray's bear that unmistakable LES COEURS BRISES signature Mark of gorgeous dancers in their lavish African attire surrounding "The Lucky" Danny Engobo. Some bastards do have heaven on Earth!
